'Avatar' Not the Biggest Video on Demand Rental in 2010
The other day we brought you a list of the top ten highest grossing films of 2010, and now we have a list of the most popular video-on-demand titles. This year people were watching movies on-demand more than they ever were before, especially since cable providers (and studios) are making it easier (and more enjoyable) to watch movies at home.
James Cameron to Help Make 3D Cirque du Soleil Movie
In his effort to turn every piece of entertainment into 3D, James Cameron will be producing a new family-oriented feature film that will in some way be connected to those high-flying, freakishly flexible wizards from Cirque du Soleil. The film itself sounds a bit confusing and we’re curious to see what the end result will look like, but based on the description provided by Deadline it appears as if the movie will include a narrative storyline that will be mixed with 3D coverage of different themed Cirque du Soleil performances in Las Vegas.
Here's How You Can Watch 'Avatar' in 3D at Home
Leading up to the upcoming release of that fancy three-disc special edition version of James Cameron's Avatar on Blu-ray and DVD, we were all under the assumption that they weren't releasing a 3D version yet. All we've been hearing is that a 3D version of Avatar is being planned for release next year (most likely), and so all you can get now is either the single disc or the special edition, due in stores on November 16th. That's true – the new special edition won't have a 3D copy of the film attached to it – but if you want to spend a little more money, there is one way to watch Avatar in 3D in your living room.
It's Official: James Cameron Will Direct 'Avatar 2' and 'Avatar 3' Next
There's been a bunch of talk as of late surrounding James Cameron and whether he would be taking on another project (possibly Cleopatra with Angelina Jolie) prior to filming one or more Avatar sequels. Obviously an Avatar sequel was a given the moment the first film became the highest grossing movie of all time, but the question soon revolved around how long audiences would have to wait for that follow up.
'Avatar' Extended Special Edition DVD/Blu-ray Details
Those of you who skipped on buying or renting Avatar when it was released as a single disc with no extra flair earlier this year in the hopes the next release would be more up your alley should be satisfied with what 20th Century Fox plans to unveil this November 16th. The Avatar Extended Collector's Edition will hit on Blu-ray and DVD in a three-disc set that promises to contain "Eight Hours of Never-Before-Seen Material and In-Depth Exploration into the World of Pandora!" Woohoo!
Is James Cameron Filming 'Avatar 2' Underwater?
As of now, 20th Century Fox hasn’t exactly come right out and said they’re making an Avatar 2. It’s been whispered about from time to time, and James Cameron has made it perfectly clear that he intends to make at least two sequels at some point, but we’re still waiting for some magic studio wizard to float down and present us with an official announcement (and a release date).
You Rate the 'Avatar 3D Special Edition' Re-Release
Since this weekend's box office winner is still being decided due to a photo finish between new releases The Last Exorcism ($21.3 million) and Takers ($21 million), we'll let those two battle it out and instead focus on another new release that was more of a re-release with additional footage. 20th Century Fox decided that this would be a good weekend to re-release Avatar in theaters with roughly 8 minutes of additional footage.
New ‘Avatar’ Special Edition DVD to Include 16 Minutes of New Footage
Those who don’t feel like heading to the theater during the 3D re-release of Avatar this weekend can take comfort in the fact that, yes, the upcoming Special Edition DVD (one of many to hit stores over the next few years, we presume) will include a whopping 16 minutes of new footage (via THR) – making it so there’s something new to be found every 15 minutes, according to one 20th Century Fox exec.

‘Avatar’ Sequels Could Shoot Back to Back
Once again James Cameron was back talking about Avatar while he promoted the upcoming re-release of what is now the highest grossing film of all time. In case you weren’t aware, 20th Century Fox will be re-releasing Avatar in theaters (in 3D only) with nine extra minutes added to its running time. Speaking to MTV, Cameron says those nine extra minutes will include a new Pandoran creature that we didn’t see the first time around; a creature that will be the focus of a Na’vi hunt. This is footage that was cut from the original due to time constraints.
Guillermo del Toro Teams with James Cameron on Next Film
According to the site, Del Toro will team up with James Cameron (of all people) on an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness for Universal. Yes, it will be in 3D, and with Cameron in there as a producer, we know the 3D on this flick will ultimately rock our socks off. And it'll be a scary movie too!
'Avatar' Re-Release Trailer Features New Footage
Last time I wrote about the re-release of Avatar in theaters later this summer, you all had plenty to say (at last count the post had 72 comments). I was sensing a mixed crowd – with some of you itching to see the film again in 3D up on the big screen (like me), and others not interested in what they consider to be a cash-grab attempt (ie: just a way for the studio to make even more money off the movie).
'Avatar' Heading Back to Theaters -- Will You See It?
Guess who’s baaaaack? If you somehow haven’t managed to get your fill of James Cameron’s Avatar yet (what’s the matter with you – the thing has made like a trillion dollars!), then carve out some time around August 27th because 20th Century Fox is throwing that sucker back into theaters with eight extra minutes of footage. Eight minutes!
James Cameron's Next 3D Film Is ...
Now that Avatar has become the biggest film of all time (in terms of box office dollars), I’m sure a lot of folks are wondering what director James Cameron plans to do next. Will he tackle Avatar 2? Will he direct a movie about the bombing of Hiroshima? Will he build a spaceship, move to Mars and film the entire thing in 3D?
'Titanic 3D' Due in March 2012 - Will You See It?
Not long ago – around the time Avatar was ruling not only the box office, but all movie blogs around the world – news came out that James Cameron was converting Titanic over to 3D for some big, splashy re-release in theaters. Now word comes from the LA Times (in an article about Titanic actress Gloria Stuart’s 100th birthday) that Cameron plans to re-release Titanic in theaters (in 3D!) in March of 2012, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.
'Avatar 2' Details! Where the Sequel will Take Place and More
On the eve of its first (of many) DVD releases, we finally have some concrete information with regards to where James Cameron plans to take his Avatar sequel. Not surprisingly – considering Cameron's love for all things underwater – it appears as if Avatar 2 will concentrate on the oceans of Pandora. In a question about the challenges of his next project, Cameron revealed to the LA Times a little more about the ground (or should I say, water) he'd love to cover in the sequel.
'Avatar 2' Still Brewing
With the first round of Avatar DVDs hitting the shelves this Tuesday, producer Jon Landau met with some members of the press to talk about the making of the film and the upcoming DVD, but he also entertained questions about the sequel. So far this much is known: The folks at 20th Century Fox are itching to piece together an Avatar sequel, and James Cameron (as well as his team) are more than willing to jump right back on. Problem is, of course, that contracts need to be drawn, and scripts need to be written (and approved) and a lot has to happen before Avatar 2 goes from idea to reality.
'The Hobbit' May Go 3D, While Sigourney Weaver Says Yes to 'Avatar 2'
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that a really big upcoming film is considering filming in 3D, especially after Avatar smashed up the box office something vicious by really wowing audiences with the technology. I’m still of the opinion, however, that it really does depend on the film – and that not all blockbusters deserve to be in 3D. But you know Hollywood – they’re gonna try to milk this sucker until there’s nothing left, and so with that comes news that Guillermo del Toro is now considering 3D for his two-part film based on The Hobbit, which is a prequel to Peter Jackson’s three Lord of the Rings movies.
Matt Damon and Jake Gyllenhaal Almost Starred in 'Avatar'
One of the biggest criticisms hurled at James Cameron's Avatar was that the story wasn't very strong and Sam Worthington wasn't a very good actor. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Sam Worthington; I don't think he gives us enough as an actor, and he was very stale in Avatar. Interestingly enough, though, Worthington almost didn't get the job for Avatar – two other (more prominent) actors were offered the role first.
'Avatar' DVD to Hit Sooner Than You Think
When news first hit that the Avatar DVD and Blu-ray would arrive in stores by June 30th, we assumed that meant late May, early June or thereabouts. However, while speaking to the Wall Street Journal, James Cameron admitted that they're hoping to release the standard DVD and Blu-ray on Earth Day, April 22nd, which isn't too far off at all.
James Cameron Mentoring the New Spider-Man?
Obviously one of the biggest news stories of the month so far has been that, according to reports, Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) is mentoring the next Superman movie and helping Warner Bros. figure out the right path to take when it comes to successfully rebooting the classic DC character. Meanwhile, perhaps Sony caught on to this whole Hollywood mentoring program, because Avatar producer Jon Landau just told MTV that James Cameron has met with Spider-Man director Marc Webb to discuss shooting in 3D.
Is There an 'Avatar' Prequel Planned for Later This Year?
Short answer…yes. While fans of Avatar will be able to enjoy a prequel of sorts to Avatar (potentially by the end of this year), said prequel will not be arriving in movie theaters, but instead on bookshelves. According to MTV, James Cameron will be writing a prequel companion novel to Avatar that will fill in some of the gaps that were missing in the film
'Dear John' bumps 'Avatar' with $32.4M debut
A sci-fi love story has given way to an earthbound romance at the box office, livening up typically slow times at theaters over Super Bowl weekend.
Released by Sony's Screen Gems banner, "Dear John" debuted as the No. 1 movie with $32.4 million, knocking off "Avatar" after seven weekends in first place, according to studio estimates Sunday.
'Avatar': Sequel Talk, DVD News and More Records Broken
It's a new day, which means there's more Avatar to talk about. Yes, it's now the highest grossing film of all time, and yes it won Best Picture at the Golden Globes, and yes it was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar yesterday along with nine other movies. But what about the sequel? Because that's all we really care about at this point, right?
'Avatar,' 'The Hurt Locker' lead Oscar nominations
The science-fiction sensation "Avatar" and the war-on-terror thriller "The Hurt Locker" lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each, including best picture and director for former spouses James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow.
New Trailer: 'The Losers'
After experiencing her otherworldliness in Avatar, we'll get to see Zoe Saldana in human form again as Aisha, a gun-toting femme fatale in the upcoming action thriller The Losers. It opens April 9th, and sort of snuck up on us with this preview.
Avatar Is Now the Highest Grossing Movie Ever Made
We all knew it would happen eventually, we just didn't know when. Now we do. At some point over the weekend, Avatar surpassed Titanic's record-holding total of $1.242 billion dollars, and now it sits somewhere north of $1.292 billion – making it the highest grossing film of all time. The record it still hasn't set yet has to do with domestic grosses, though it's only about $50 million shy of Titanic's $600.8 million. So, congrats to all of you who made Avatar the biggest film of all time (in terms of box office draw)!
Sam Worthington to Play Dracula?
Now that Avatar has become the highest grossing movie of all time, it's safe to say that film's star, Sam Worthington, has become a household name, or is at least a lot more recognizable than he was prior to Avatar. With another mega, effects-laden spectacular (Clash of the Titans) set to hit theaters in a couple months, Worthington – with his good looks, action hero charm and ability to kick lots of butt – could soon become one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood (if he isn't already). So what's he going to do next? How about Dracula?
'Avatar' passes 'Dark Knight' on domestic chart
"Avatar" is closer to smashing box offices record set by "Titanic."
James Cameron's sci-fi saga was No. 1 at the box office for the sixth-straight weekend with $34.9 million, flying past "The Dark Knight" to become the second highest-grossing film domestically with $551.7 million and creeping toward the $600.8 million first-place mark set by "Titantic." It's also on the verge of passing "Titanic" on the worldwide chart.
'Avatar' gets 8 noms for British film awards
Sci-fi extravaganza 'Avatar,' Iraq drama "The Hurt Locker" and coming-of-age story "An Education" earned eight nominations apiece Thursday in the race for the British Academy Film Awards, Britain's equivalent of the Oscars.
Watch This: James Cameron's 'Laser Cats 5'!
While all of you have kept busy making routine trips to the movie theater to watch Avatar…again…for a tenth time, little did you know that director James Cameron was slowly piecing together his next epic blockbuster. Yes, you heard me – the dude has been busy staging his biggest film yet: an all out, balls-to-the-wall action flick about a couple of guys who travel back in time to destroy a bunch of cats who shoot lasers out of their eyes.
Did 'Avatar' Deserve to Win Best Picture?
We've already gone over the winners and losers of this year's Golden Globe Awards, but perhaps the most talked-about win was for Avatar in the Best Picture (Drama) category. It's no secret that the foreign press went wild for Avatar when they first saw it, and that the film itself has made a killing with international audiences. In fact, I even picked Avatar to win Best Picture at the Globes in my yearly round of predictions for the LA Times Buzzmeter site. I just thought the film would fare better at this ceremony and with the foreign press, since they usually like the spectacle.
Golden Globes Show Awards 'Avatar', Bridges, Bullock & More
So, did you catch the Golden Globes? Here are a few random thoughts on the whole affair, before I send you off to our Awards Watch site for more on the winners and pics from the red carpet (and even more pics in our sister site E!'s Globes pose-off).
`Avatar,' `Trek,' 8 others score Producer noms
Science-fiction scored big with the Producers Guild of America, with "Avatar," "Star Trek" and "District 9" taking three of the 10 nominations Tuesday for the group's top film honors.
'Avatar' Hits $1 Billion Worldwide
James Cameron has officially become the first director to watch two of his films gross over $1 billion worldwide at the box office. Over the weekend, Avatar crossed the billion dollar mark after only 17 days in release. With its $1.02 billion, the film becomes the fourth highest grossing film ever behind movies like Cameron's Titanic (1.8 billion), The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King ($1.12 billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07 billion). Experts say Avatar is poised to pass both Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings before all is said and done, making it so Cameron will earn the top two spots on the list of highest grossing films – a statistic that's pretty darn staggering, don't you think? (Also keep in mind the fact that two of those films eventually went on to win the Best Picture Oscar.)
Will There Be an ‘Avatar 2’?
With Avatar winning the holiday box office by raking in a staggering $75 million here in the states, bringing its worldwide total to – are you sitting down? -- $615 million in only two weeks of release, it’s pretty obvious that 20th Century Fox will find a way to make at least one sequel. James Cameron has previously stated that his original plan all along was for three Avatar films, and that he sold Fox on the pitch by convincing them to put up all that money (the most ever, topping out somewhere near $500 million) to help create this new technology so that when it came time to do the sequels, most of the legwork would already have been put in.
James Cameron Talks Avatar
James Cameron was positively giddy in discussing Avatar last week by phone during the London junket. And why not? The most hyped movie of the year is living up to all expectations in breathtaking fashion, and breaking new frontiers as theatrical spectacle as well. We could sure use it: Avatar is the most visceral and immersive 3-D movie ever made, and it could very well change the way movies are made and watched from now on. And Cameron suggests that this is just the tip of the iceberg…

What Did You Think About ‘Avatar’?
A little while ago, Variety reported that James Cameron’s Avatar had grossed $77.3 million over the weekend, which is up from the $72 million originally reported. Why is that a big deal? Well, because it means the film has now beaten I Am Legend ($77.2 million) for the best ever December weekend opening. These numbers come despite the fact that there was a major snow storm on the East Coast that kept a lot of people away from theaters.
Movie Aliens: From E.T. to Avatar
Neytiri is a true Na'vi from the planet Pandora in James Cameron's latest big-budget sci-fi feast for the eyes. Blue and cat-like, the Na'vi have their own culture, language and don't particularly like the humans invading their home planet. Beautifully played by Zoe Saldana, it got us to thinking about all the other aliens we've known from the movies over the years.
Box Office Poll: How Much will Avatar Make This Weekend?
We're obviously taking another week off from our weekly box office poll because while there's more than one film arriving in wide release this weekend (Avatar and Did You Hear About The Morgans?), it doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict that Avatar will surely come out victorious. So, in lieu of voting on which film will make the most money at the box office, I thought it'd be fun to take a wild guess at how much money Avatar will make in its opening weekend.
The Five: Reasons to See 'Avatar' This Weekend
So the time has finally come for the rest of the world (beyond the critics and press) to feast on James Cameron's Avatar. We've spent the past week reading what all the critics had to say, with some very positive reaction (the effects are awesome!) and some very negative reaction (the story is way lame!). But now it's your turn to see the film, and discuss it at length with your friends, family and all of us here at Fandango – and to help you decide whether to fork over those hard-earned dollars or not, here are five reasons why you should see Avatar this weekend.
So What's The Buzz on 'Avatar'?
In case you don't know, James Cameron's Avatar had its premiere in London last night while the film simultaneously screened for critics (including myself) across the United States. So what's the verdict? Is the marketing right, and will this film really change the way we watch movies forever?
Scoop This: 'Avatar' Song, Portman as Ballerina and Michael Bay's Victoria's Secret Commercial
The theme song-of-sorts for James Cameron's Avatar has finally arrived online. It's called "I See You", and it's performed by Leona Lewis. Like Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic, "I See You" is another slow romantic tune that's sure to land an Oscar nod (but may be a little too boring to actually win that Oscar). Lewis certainly sounds good belting out these lyrics, but, unlike Dion's song, there's just nothing catchy about this one. Here, listen to it below and let us know what you think.

Watch: James Cameron Talks 'Avatar' on '60 Minutes'
Now that The Twilight Saga: New Moon has officially landed in theaters, we can finally put it those darn vampires and werewolves behind us (for now) and look ahead to the year's next mega epic release: James Cameron's Avatar.
Scoop This: 'The Hobbit' Casting, 'Avatar' TV Spots and Mel Gibson as James Bond?
Looks like 20th Century Fox is now rolling out the Avatar cavalry as a bunch of new TV spots have arrived online, as well as sandwiched between some of your favorite television shows. The latest TV spot runs at about a minute and a half, and it looks to be the first to feature a "voiceover guy" – who calls Avatar "the greatest adventure ever told" at one point.
Behold! The New 'Avatar' Trailer Has Arrived!
Is this really the film that's supposed to change the way we watch movies forever? That's what visionary filmmaker James Cameron would like you to believe, and based on this brand new extended trailer for Avatar…well, he might be right. Though this is the kind of film that deserves to be watched in a large theater equipped with a large sound system, it's fairly obvious that, if anything, come December 18th , we'll all be served a very large helping of fantastical visuals while we travel to the distant planet of Pandora with our 3D glasses firmly planted on our faces.
Fanboy Fix: 'Avatar', 'Iron Man 2' and 'Inception'
After the online ridiculousness that followed last week's Avatar trailer premiere, and the circus of information born out of Avatar Day, the film's star, Sam Worthington, sat down with some journalists on the London set of Clash of the Titans to defend the trailer, the film and director James Cameron's vision. On the trailer, Worthington says, ""Man, it's got a hell of a lot of hype to it. I read all what was said yesterday about the trailer and I can see their point. As I said, it's not meant to be [seen] on an Apple Mac. It's built for IMAX. It's built for 3D. Read more of Sam Worthington's interview on Avatar.

Comic-Con Day 1: 'Avatar' Panel Debuts 25 Mins. of Film; IMAX 3-D to Screen Footage for Free!
The Twihards got their fix with the New Moon panel, and then came the fanboys' turn with director James Cameron's massive unveiling of 25 minutes of Avatar footage—a sci-fi lover's dream come true. Not only did he deliver a mind-blowing, immersive 3-D experience, Cameron's highly under-wraps film delved deep into his imagination, bringing to life the exotic world of Pandora and the emotional story of a man who falls in love with a Na'avi. Cameron's exclusive footage debut for the Comic-Con audience will soon be extended on a national level; he announced that on Aug. 21, IMAX 3-D theaters will screen 15 minutes of Avatar for free—a pretty good deal if you couldn't get into Hall H.
