Schoolhouse Rock!: Special 30th Anniversary Edition [2 Discs] [DVD]
Schoolhouse Rock!: Special 30th Anniversary Edition [2 Discs] [DVD]Price: $9.99
Store: Best Buy Co, Inc.
Description: Pull a box of Captain Crunch from the cabinet, don some pajamas and pop these discs into the DVD player for a trip back in time to those lazy Saturday mornings of our youth. This huge, double-disc set is crammed with almost every three-minute animated episode of Schoolhouse Rock - that's 52 toe-tapping, tune-jingling ditties teaching young minds the power of conjunctions, the principles of Congress and the beauty of adverbs. From the earliest cartoon short in 1973 through some newer renditions in the early 1990s, this DVD set contains them all in their full form, but with extraordinary sound and color. Delivered in Dolby 2.0 sound, the songs blast from the speakers with crisp tones never quite experienced on television nearly 30 years ago. One negative: Some of the digital transfers aren't top quality. Every episode is here, from the much-loved "Conjunction Junction" to "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" to "My Hero Zero" to "Good Eleven." One caution: the catchy jingles will play over and over again in your head. You might even find yourself in a crowded elevator, humming, "Interplanet Janet she's a galaxy girl, a solar system miss from a future world." Some of the edition's highlights include the all-new song "I'm Gonna Send Your Vote to College," the top 20 Countdown, a three-song set of "Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips" and the long-lost "Weather Show." The entire four-hour rockfest is nothing shy of brilliant based on the content and the completeness of the collection. This set is a must-own for anyone with children or anyone who was once a child. At the very least, the songs can trigger a relapse into good grammar, especially after watching "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here."

The Players Club [DVD] [1998]Price: $9.99
Store: Best Buy Co, Inc.
Description: Rapper and actor Ice Cube's directorial debut, The Players Club comes to DVD with both a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and an inferior standard full-frame transfer. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer, biographies of the cast and crew, and a pair of music videos, "We Be Clubbin" and "My Loved Ones." New Line has done a very good job with this release that will surely please fans of Cube, and may find the film a broader audience than saw it in the theater.

The High and the Mighty [2 Discs] [DVD] [1954]
The High and the Mighty [2 Discs] [DVD] [1954]Price: $9.99
Store: Best Buy Co, Inc.
Description: William Wellman's The High and the Mighty has arrived on DVD with the kind of treatment that fans of the filmmaker and the movie, and its star, John Wayne, had always hoped it might receive. The two-disc special edition not only offers a stunningly beautiful transfer of the movie, letterboxed to around 2.35:1, and a loud, rich soundtrack, but enough extras to keep fans busy for the best part of a month. The most obvious special feature is the commentary track by Leonard Maltin in tandem with William Wellman Jr, aviation enthusiast Vincent Longo, and cast members Karen Sharpe and Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez - they range across every subject under the sun that's even remotely relevant to the movie, over 145 minutes of screen time. Accessing the commentary track, incidentally, is a little tricky as there is no "special feature" button on the menu for the first disc - it's accessible through the "set up" command for audio and subtitles. The movie has been given 22 chapters, which is just about adequate for the 147-minute running time. The second disc is nothing but special features and documentary material, on the history of Wayne's production company, the cast members, composer Dimitri Tiomkin (how can one argue with a DVD of a 50-year-old movie that goes into the actual recording of the score?), and just about every other aspect of the history surrounding this film, including its restoration. It's all so well done, that the new information that pours out freely and easily is dense enough to require multiple viewings. There's not a stone left unturned - they even discuss the career of minor supporting player John Howard, virtually everyone else we see on the screen, as well as the key crew members, down to their foibles. (For instance, Wellman apparently regarded character actor George Chandler as something of a good-luck charm, and used him as often as he could in his movies.) The menus are easy to use and the whole disc is almost perfect - the one flaw comes from Maltin's tendency to hyperbole; he refers to The High and the Mighty as a movie that has retained its reputation despite being out of circulation for "50 years," but the movie was available on television, albeit in full-screen, cropped presentations, until the early '80s, and that explains its continued high reputation.

Mame [DVD] [1974]
Mame [DVD] [1974]Price: $13.99
Store: Best Buy Co, Inc.
Description: The major bonus feature of Warner Home Video's DVD release of Gene Saks' Mame (1974) is the vintage featurette "Lucky Mame" - it is entertaining but for the wrong reasons, trying as it does to raise audience enthusiasm for the soon-to-be-released movie, when it is plain to anyone watching that the movie is just not that good. That said, as it turns out, the movie is not that bad, either - and not quite as bad as its reputation would lead one to expect. Mame was one of the notorious box office bombs of the 1970's, and helped to put a nail in the coffin of the big Hollywood musical, despite its having been a hit on Broadway. Most of this was attributed to the decision to go with Lucille Ball in the lead, in place of Angela Lansbury, who starred in the Broadway version. She gave it a good try, but neither her work, nor Paul Zindel's screenplay, nor Jerry Herman's score, could make this work commercially, and the movie disappeared after some valiant attempts by the studio to sell it. Television showings have been especially harmful to whatever reputation the movie might have salvaged - the Panavision image, cropped to 1.33-to-1, is especially worthless, as Saks tends to fill up every corner of the widescreen frame. Additionally, the movie lingered like a ghost haunting the airwaves, thanks to its cross-promotion on several episodes of Here's Lucy, Lucille Ball's then-current sitcom, which later went into syndication and kept Mame alive as a pop-culture wraith for years. Now it has arrived on DVD from Warner Home Video, in what is probably the best presentation the movie has had since 1974 - perhaps it's just that nothing couild have been as bad as the reputation that this movie has carried, but it is watchable, if not fully enjoyable, and not quite worth the 131 minutes it demands. Oh, it's sometimes as campy as all get out, but that's a virtue in a piece like this, and when director Gene Saks and his cast get things right, the results are entertaining, if not always inspired. Ball's singing voice was hopeless as an instrument, but as an honest part of her performance, it is acceptable - we're accustomed to better in our musical films, this was also the era in which Glynis Johns (hardly known for her vocal skills) scored a hit on stage with "Send In The Clowns." (Of course, with Lansbury in the role, one wouldn't have had to settle for "acceptable"). There are moments where one feels like Lucille Ball is purposefully impersonating Rosalind Russell, who did the original (non-musical) film, and other moments where one feels las though they're watching someone is doing a Lucille Ball impersonation; and the parts of the movie that fail utterly are the moments tailored for her persona, such as the fox hunting sequence. The non-musical segments lag in energy, but considering that some of the latter include Beatrice Arthur - who is easily the best thing in the movie - and Robert Preston, and they can be dealt with in the totality of the viewing experience. And in the widescreen (2.35-to-1) version, we get to see more than a glimpse of excellent supporting players such as John Wheeler. The DVD opens automatically to an easy-to-use two-layer menu that offers quick access to the featurette and the original trailer. The film has also been given a very generous 33 chapters.

Strangers on a Train [Special Edition] [2 Discs] [DVD] [1951]
Strangers on a Train [Special Edition] [2 Discs] [DVD] [1951]Price: $22.99
Store: Best Buy Co, Inc.
Description: In one of Alfred Hitchcock's suspense classics, tennis pro Guy Haines (Farley Granger) chances to meet wealthy wastrel Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker) on a train. Having read all about Guy, Bruno is aware that the tennis player is trapped in an unhappy marriage to to wife Miriam (Laura Elliott) and has been seen in the company of senator's daughter Ann Morton (Ruth Roman). Baiting Guy, Bruno reveals that he feels trapped by his hated father (Jonathan Hale). As Guy listens with detached amusement, Bruno discusses the theory of "exchange murders." Suppose that Bruno were to murder Guy's wife, and Guy in exchange were to kill Bruno's father? With no known link between the two men, the police would be none the wiser, would they? When he reaches his destination, Guy bids goodbye to Bruno, thinking nothing more of the affable but rather curious young man's homicidal theories. And then, Guy's wife turns up strangled to death. Co-adapted by Raymond Chandler from a novel by Patricia Highsmith, Strangers on a Train perfectly exemplifies Hitchcock's favorite theme of the evil that lurks just below the surface of everyday life and ordinary men.

Next Friday [DVD] [2000]
Next Friday [DVD] [2000]Price: $5.99
Store: Best Buy Co, Inc.
Description: For Next Friday, New Line has once again done a great job on a DVD. The transfer, framed at the theatrical ratio of 1.85: 1 (anamorphic), is superb. Colors are sharp and constant and there are no defects. The soundtrack, which includes a lot of hip-hop and rap tunes, is good but not outstanding, lacking any real range. The surrounds in the Dolby Digital 5.1 track are rarely used, but that is far from a surprise. Everything seems centered up front, with clear dialogue and sound that is distortion-free. The DVD for the original Friday was a bit disappointing in the way of supplemental material, but this disc more than makes up for it. There are numerous highlights to this disc, starting with an audio commentary track. Though they seem to be recorded separately, director Steve Carr and Ice Cube talk about everything from making a sequel to where they each began. It also might be the first hip-hop commentary, as it has numerous moments of reverb and vocal styling done after the fact. It's a bit unusual and takes a little time to get used to, but is interesting nevertheless. Next is a rather lengthy featurette with a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film that includes numerous interviews with the cast and crew. A real plus is an audition tape for Mike Epps. While the video and audio quality are awful, it's interesting to see Epps, a stand-up comic without film experience, interact with Cube. An interesting idea that has been used on other discs - watching the film with a small box showing the storyboards - is taken to the extreme here as it can be done for the entire film. In addition there are bloopers and an alternate ending, some strange painting of the Cucamonga locations, music videos from Ice Cube ("You Can't Do It" featuring Mack 10 and Ms. Toi) and Lil Zane ("Money Stretch"). There are also trailers for this film, including the G-rated version and the R-rated version, plus trailers for Friday, The Players Club, and Dangerous Ground. Finally, there are some DVD-ROM features, including access to the screenplay. This is another excellent disc in the Platinum Series from New Line.

Walker [Criterion Collection] [DVD] [1987]
Walker [Criterion Collection] [DVD] [1987]Price: $29.99
Store: Best Buy Co, Inc.
Description: Alex Cox's Walker, an audacious and bitterly funny fusion of political satire and historical epic, was savaged by many puzzled critics upon its initial release in 1987, but the film's partisans finally get their day in the sun with this DVD release of the movie from the Criterion Collection, which allows it to be seen to its full advantage for the first time since its poorly handled theatrical release. Walker has been given a widescreen transfer to disc, letterboxed at 1.85:1 and enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16x9 monitors; director Cox approved the transfer, and it certainly makes the most of David Bridges' richly dramatic camerawork. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono, and the multi-layered sound mix is well served in this edition, especially Joe Strummer's musical score. The dialogue is primarily in English, with no multiple language options, though optional English subtitles are included. As is their custom, Criterion have included a variety of relevant bonus materials, including "Dispatches from Nicaragua," a fascinating documentary on the making of the film which combines behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with the cast and crew, and observations from Nicaraguans observing this recreation of their history. Also featured are "On Moviemaking and the Revolution," a spoken-word piece in which a bit player in the movie talks about both radical cinema and the presence of a film crew in Nicaragua; an extensive portfolio of still photos taken during Walker's production; a commentary track in which Cox and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer talk about the film, its influences, and its political stance; the original theatrical trailer; and a short subject in which Cox reads and comments upon a number of Walker's reviews. The beautifully designed booklet that accompanies this release also includes an essay on the film by Graham Fuller, an article Wurlitzer wrote to accompany the film's published screenplay, and a remembrance by actress Linda Sandoval on the challenges of shooting Walker in a nation at war. After years of languishing in obscurity, Criterion's DVD release finally gives Walker the care and exposure it deserves, and hopefully this will allow this fascinating work to be reevaluated at a time when the issues it addresses are as relevant as ever.
